How the felt is made
Laying out
Using wool tops, usually merino, that has been dyed, I lay out the fibres. I use a minimum of 4 layers of carded fleece
Wetting
The fibres are wet with soapy warm water and smoothed and rubbed until the fibres start to matt together in every direction
Rolling
Then the piece is rolled, this can take up to 1000 rolls, depending on how well the fibres felt
Fulling
This is the stage that the shrinking happens, through throwing, and rinsing in hot and cold water the felt is shrinks around 20%, getting denser and stronger
Shaping and drying
The felt is now dried and ironed ready to be made up
About Me
Hicksmade was founded in 2007 and is the landing spot for much of my creative outpouring.
You'll find a variety of products here, loads of lovely hand felted goodies - the felt made from scratch using either the wet-felting or needle-felting technique ... or a combination of both!
Don't be surprised to also find lino-prints, drawings, sewn goods. It's all about variety and seeing where the inspiration takes me. Every item is individually handmade by me and is completely unique.
I'm also planning to support Hicksdesign with some designery related products.
Check out the blog where I gather things that inspire or interest me, along with snippets of what I'm working on or thinking about!
